    • The “cut” in an IDE/PATA cable related to Cable Select (CS) is a purposeful design tweak that enables automatic master/slave configuration.
      • Pin 28: On a true cable select (CS) cable, pin 28 is intentionally disconnected on the middle connector to designate the connected drive as the slave.
      • Pin 34 (Presence of 80-conductor cable): With the introduction of faster Ultra DMA (UDMA) speeds, standard 40-pin IDE cables were replaced with 80-conductor cables. These 80-conductor cables have 40 extra ground wires to reduce crosstalk and improve signal integrity. To let the host controller know an 80-conductor cable is in use, pin 34 is grounded. For this to work correctly, the wire for pin 34 is often cut on the device side of the cable.
