- The primary purpose of
a DVI Single-Link (DVI-D Single-Link) cable is to transmit pure,
uncompressed digital video from a source device (like an older
computer graphics card) to a digital display (such as an LCD monitor
or projector). It was designed to replace noisy analog VGA
connections by matching pixels directly from the video card to the
screen panel.
-
Single TMD's Link: It uses
a single Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS)
transmitter. This architecture utilize three data channels for
primary colors (RGB) and one clock channel.
-
Maximum Resolution:
Limited to a maximum of 4.95 Gbps. This supports a top resolution of
1920 x1200 at 60Hz or 1080p at 60Hz.
-
Pin Configuration:
It features 18 digital pins arranged in two distinct 3x3 blocks,
with a central gap of 6 missing pins (unlike the solid 24-pin grid
found on Dual-Link cables)
-
Flat Ground Bar:
The right side features a single flat ground blade with
no analog pins surrounding it,
preventing it from passing legacy analog signals.
-
Forward Compatibility:
Because it uses the exact same digital video signaling protocols as
HDMI, a DVI Single-Link cable can be adapted to an HDMI port using a
simple passive adapter or adapter cable (though it will not carry
audio).
